In 1983 N.C. Senior Games began with a vision to create a year-round health promotion and education program for North Carolinians 50 years of age and better. Today, there are over 60,000 participants in 53 Local Games programs that serve all 100 counties across the state. Senior Games is a holistic approach to body, mind and spirit staying fit, while enjoying the company of friends, family, spectators, and volunteers.
The Johnston County Senior Games (JCSG) and SilverArts program is a dynamic, year-round initiative that encourages individuals aged 50 and better to stay healthy, active, and engaged in their communities. Sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games, Inc., this program isn't just about competition—it's about embracing a lifestyle of vitality, creativity, and camaraderie. Since 1987, JCSG has provided a wide array of athletic and artistic opportunities, celebrating both physical abilities and creative talents within the senior community.
The athletic events include a diverse range of activities such as Basketball Shooting, Bocce, Bowling, Cornhole, Football Throw, Softball Throw, Golf, Horseshoes, Mini Golf, Swimming, Pickleball, Shuffleboard, and Track & Field. Meanwhile, the SilverArts portion highlights the artistic side with categories in Literary Arts (essays, poetry, etc.), Visual Arts (photography, painting, etc.), Heritage Arts (woodworking, crocheting, etc.), and Performing Arts (dance, music, comedy, and drama). These artistic expressions are celebrated at the annual SilverArts Showcase and Follies Show, providing a stage for senior creativity to shine.
Athletes compete in a variety of age divisions, ranging from 50-54 to 100+, with both men and women participating. First, second, and third-place winners in all sporting events and SilverArts categories, as well as the Best-in-Show for Performing Arts, earn the opportunity to advance to the North Carolina State Senior Games, held annually in the fall.
JCSG is more than just a competition—it's a celebration of active, vibrant living and the talents of seniors across Johnston County. Whether participating in a sport or showcasing creative work, it's an event that fosters lifelong engagement and a sense of community among its participants.
